HOW TO FIND A LAWYER

HOW TO FIND A LAWYER

In this age of constant lawyer advertising, it is important to actually find the best lawyer suited to your legal matter. There are lawyer ads where the lawyer no longer practices law—they are just advertising personalities. Some lawyers who advertise have nice ads, but they are really not very good lawyers. Some advertisers are not even lawyers at all!

Lawyer advertisements do not tell you anything about the lawyer’s personality or character. Are they honest? Do they see their clients on time? Do they return phones? Do you get to meet with that lawyer or just a secretary?

As with a doctor, picking a lawyer that has the right experience and expertise can be difficult. Just like your doctor, your relationship with your lawyer will be highly personal and must involve the utmost level of trust and respect—both for the lawyer and for the client.

Over the years, my experience has shown me that one of the best ways to select an attorney to help you is to first contact your family attorney—the one your father and mother always called when there was a problem. Or, talk to a friend who had a good experience with their lawyer. Then let that lawyer direct you as to which attorney might be best able to help you. Sometimes it may be that attorney or a colleague they trust.

No matter how sincere it may seem, most lawyer advertising is about making money—no different than an ad for Walmart or McDonalds. Don’t forget that!
Really good lawyers show compassion and caring for their clients.
Ultimately, the right choice will be critical to the success of your legal case.
